Brookdale Senior Living is investing $4 million to meet the growing need of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the Sarasota area. Brookdale Sarasota Midtown is expanding its dementia care services and creating dozens of new jobs in the local community. The senior living community hosted a grand reopening event on Thursday, June 21 last night and invited the community to come see the new addition.

The project is converting existing space into 32 specialized apartments called Clare Bridge Crossings for those in the early stages of dementia. It is the only community in the area offering a program specifically designed for people living in the early to mid-stages of dementia. Clare Bridge Crossings residents take part in activities each day that engage them cognitively, socially and physically. On any given day, they might visit a museum to discover its exhibits, learn square dancing as a way to practice processing information and moving the body, write their life stories in a journal, expand their horizons through technology, or make new friends.

“Studies are showing it’s possible for people in the early phase to maintain abilities and even slow the disease’s advancement by participating in programming that builds up brain synapses and resilience,” said Juliet Holt Klinger, Brookdale’s senior director of dementia care. “This is the focus of this very unique Clare Bridge Crossings’ programming, which also provides residents the wonderful benefit of daily joy and purpose.”

There are 5.7 million people in America living with Alzheimer’s and dementia today. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates by 2050 this figure will reach 14 million people with a cost as high as $1.1 trillion.

“The Clare Bridge Crossings program gives us more capacity to meet needs of residents as they change and evolve,” said Brookdale Sarasota Midtown Executive Director Matthew Thompson
