It is no secret that aging well includes being interested in different ideas and pursuits. Sangeeta Devi, Health & Wellness Director at Brookdale Cortona Park in Northern California, sees the value in learning and teaching others about aging well. The science of aging is what prompts her to seek more education and guide her nursing career by it.

“Assisted living is fast growing and this industry is so incredible,” she explains. “

With Brookdale for about 12 years, including legacy firm Emeritus, Sangeeta is responsible for resident medication management and coordination of care with personal providers, home health, hospice and therapy providers and physicians. She also ensures that residents and their families are educated about disease management.

It’s a big job for someone who rose through the medical ranks as a phlebotomist and EKG technician after first moving to the U.S. from New Zealand. But nursing was not on the radar early in her career - the Fiji native went to college in Auckland, N.Z. for business accounting, met her husband and they made a new life in California. Helping people became more of a priority.

In addition to her work in a Fremont, Calif., lab, Sangeeta also served as a part-time caregiver for legacy Brookdale firm Emeritus in nearby Livermore. Her supervisor, a nursing director, became executive director of an Emeritus community, and recruited her to become the resident care director. She took the position on a part-time basis and studied for the nursing board exam, passing it the first time.

She grew in experience and knowledge, and in 2011, Emeritus named Sangeeta Nurse of the Year for her outstanding work. Acquiring skills continues though – she begins pursuit of the R.N. designation in May.

“As a nurse, I have worked in assisted living, skilled nursing and, for little time, in a hospital. It is challenging but so rewarding. At night, if you have put a smile on one person’s face, that’s very rewarding.”

Nurse Appreciation Week is May 6-12, but Brookdale is celebrating a Culture of Wellness in a Clinical World all month. Read blogs from Kim Estes Elliott and Carol Cummings, plus meet Brookdale Health and Wellness Superstars at BrookdaleNews.com.
