Alex Fermanis, a certified music therapist at Brookdale Hospice Colorado Springs, is trying to secure a spot on Fjällräven Polar 2019, a 300-kilometer dog sled race through the Scandinavian Arctic. He’s asking for your vote in the hopes of clinching one of two spots allotted to the North American region. Only the top vote getter in each region is guaranteed a spot. The Fjällräven Polar jury members will choose who gets the second spot.
You can vote for Alex on the Fjällräven Polar website before Dec. 13, when voting ends. You must have a Facebook account to vote.
Alex, who joined Brookdale in 2016, says his personal passion is exploring. His exploration of the power of music led him to a career as a music therapist. Alex entered college with the intent on becoming a classical musician and playing in an orchestra, but found himself interested in psychology before discovering music therapy. After rotations as a therapist in both neo-natal and hospice, Alex realized he enjoyed providing end-of-life care.
“I enjoy the life review and reminiscence aspect,” he said. “I love bringing in music and using it in a way to create a positive presence in a time that is otherwise scary and sad. Brookdale is very ground-breaking in hiring a lot of music therapists across the country. I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to touch the lives of hundreds of families. It would not be possible without Brookdale’s commitment to providing the best hospice care.”
