Resident Living with Alzheimer’s Fulfills Wish Thanks to Brookdale and Wish of a Lifetime
Jeanette Fernandes feels most at home with her toes in the sand and the ocean breeze on her face.
“She is a beach baby,” explains her son, Keith. “She always lived by the water, and I remember her going to the beach to disappear for hours on long walks by the ocean.”
A few years ago, doctors diagnosed Jeanette, 79, with an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s disease that has left her unable to communicate and limited her physical capabilities. Even though she still lives near the beach at Brookdale Willow Wood in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, she doesn’t get to see the sea as much as she once did. That changed when Brookdale and the non-profit organization Wish of a Lifetime arranged for her to have the perfect day at the beach with her family on March 23.
Jeanette and her family spent the day at Pompano Beach soaking up the sun and enjoying the cool breeze of the ocean. The experience was reminiscent of the many trips to the beach Jeanette made with her family over the years. This opportunity allowed Jeanette to renew and celebrate one of her greatest passions with the most important people in her life. Live music and a caricature artist helped set the mood for the afternoon and provided touching souvenirs for Jeanette’s family.
Despite the challenges Alzheimer’s presents, Jeanette still has a smile that lights up the room and is described by the associates at Brookdale Willow Wood as someone that “everybody loves.”
